Update 3/16/05 - According to sources a meeting was held tonight with an in-depth discussion included. Michael Cassidy, attorney for the Police Jury, was on hand. It appears Mr. Cassidy has once again brought some organization to a the discussion and has responded to the pulse of the people of the Hathaway Community. From what I gathered, some inconsistencies were hammered out. I believe plans were revised and Mr. Bowers accepted the revisions. Things are looking positive so far for a cell tower in Hathaway. A tip of the hat to Mr. Cassidy for making the players take a step back for another view of this issue.
Pilots have to deal with all sorts of obstacles in their
fly zones. Here is a crop duster pilot dealing with the transmission lines.
There is a risk but pilots must deal with the risks. These towers are located
cutting through the country sides and in some cases through cities. They may
not seem as dangerous as say.........A Drilling Rig in the middle of a town in a
"Police Jury Managed Fair Ground" that could
have a blow out and cause people to evacuate to prevent death and injury! Of
course the greatest number of people at risk are made up of a certain ethnic
group and perhaps that makes decision making of locating a drilling rig in the
middle of town easier.

Towers are often located near highways, railroad tracks,
schools and sometimes in the middle of trailer parks. Sometimes they are located
about 50 feet away from a hotel such as this tower in Oberlin La. In the
background you will see railroad tracks and a major Evacuation route known as
Hwy 165. Perhaps this is dangerous but how does it stack up to say..........A
brand new school built next to Interstate 10 where hazardous materials are often
spilled and can be picked by a northerly wind and swept over the school yard?

Spot's Corner at Hwy 90 & 26 just a few miles north of Hathaway High School. In Hathaway, lightning can hit the tower and travel underground to fuel tanks causing an explosion. Here in Elton that can't happen judging by the comments made by one Jeff Davis Parish Police Juror. Spot's Corner's Fuel Tanks are lightning proof. While the tower in Hathaway can fall over a State Highway with only local traffic like Hwy 102, a major east/west State Highway like 190 is immune to such calamity.
It appears the state doesn't seem to concerned about it when 400 foot towers are built within 150' of a major North/South Highway such as Hwy 165 to Alexandria that is a "MAJOR Hurricane Evacuation Route" Yet, the Jeff Davis Parish Police Jury under influence by the Mosquito Abatement District's findings is concerned that a tower falling across a MINOR State Highway such as 102, and is only used for local traffic is more significant than what the state considers.
Fact is they are putting towers all over. Here is a well
secured tower that cuts right through a town, right next to a set of railroad
tracks that carries dangerous chemicals and Hazardous Wastes that can derail and
poison a town, such as what happened in Eunice La. Yet to the Jeff Davis Parish
Police Jury and the Jeff Davis Parish Mosquito Abatement District feel the tower
is more of a danger. Lets ignore the other issues of safety and focus on the
ones that are less likely to cause an accident.

The Jeff Davis Parish Police Jury and the Jeff Davis Parish Mosquito Abatement District want to define for us what is dangerous, while we know that there is alot more danger out there, they seem to ignore, can't do anything about, or perpetrate themselves. People who insist that it's "Too Close to the School" prefer to pull the covers over their head and ignore the fact that the New Jennings High School could be considered TOO CLOSE to Interstate 10. Lets be honest...A school was constructed in what many could consider a potentially "Hazardous Material Spill Hot Zone"
There is danger around every corner. It is in the cargo being delivered by 18wheels, by rail, by fuel truck and by other means. We have railroad crossings without crossing arms, School Buses without seatbelts, airplanes spraying pesticides and chemicals and we want to believe that the benefits outweigh the risks. But when it comes to a "Cingular" Cell Phone tower it is a whole new ball game. There can only be one reason behind all this! Someone is fighting the location because THEY have a better suggestion and of course could use the money or They are questioning a Cingular Tower because they believe it should a Centennial Tower, because they can use the money.........Something sucks about all this! Only time will tell!
This "Relentless Ass" wants a Cingular cell phone tower and thinks that the proposed site behind Butchie's Corner sounds like a good idea. Not at your friends house so he can get the lease money, not on your property so YOU can get the lease money, Not on government property so the government can get the lease money........On the Avant property so THEY can get the lease money!!!!!!
